Product Description

Lead-free soldering in Europe, approaching fast.

The European electronics assembly industry is fast moving towards the implementation of Lead-free solders. Although the target date of 1st July 2006 is still far away on the calendar more and more Pb-free boards are assembled using a full Pb-free process.

The present motivation of the industry to go Lead-free prior to the legal need is driven by the market itself. A second drive is not to be left behind the Japanese assembly industry that already is using Pb-free solders in big volumes.

The present motivation of the industry to go Lead-free prior to the legal need is driven by the market itself. A second drive is not to be left behind the Japanese assembly industry that already is using Pb-free solders in big volumes.

Kester is one of the leading suppliers of full Lead-free solutions in Europe. The combination of our performing solder pastes (R905), VOC-free fluxes (979), cored wires (405) and other related materials give the user a solid Lead-free process.

However one concerns still remains to be addressed: standardization of Lead-free solder joints.

Indeed until now there are no firm directives towards how a solder joint should look like. Obviously the Kester products will result in solder joint very similar to the present SnPb solder joints, however an official guideline would only bring comfort in the mind of the end-users.

Kester's Dr. Greg Munie has, in cooperation with IPC, published a white paper on the subject of the different SAC alloys available. A vast area of testing has been done on SnAg3.0Cu0.5, SnAg3.8Cu0.7 and SnAg4.0Cu0.6 alloys. Dr. Munie could conclude, a There is no significant difference between these alloysa . White paper is available on www.ipc.org

Furthermore ICP is working on a Pb-free standard that will use the IPC-610A as basis.

The industry is looking forward to the finalization of these standards.

In the mean time you can rely on Kester to have a solid, headache free lead-free process.
